My Presentation:

Topic: Digital Games

1) Quotation 1: What is "video Games"?

2) Quotation 2: What are the types of "video Games"?

3) On this topic, I would focus on the aspect of first-person shooter video games. For example, Counter-strike and Half-Life.
In the first person shooter video games, you can be a soldier or a military operator to take the missions and learn how to deal with the situation you face.

4) Video games can be divided into 3 domains mainly.

Firstly, the game involves the concept of "play". Everyone plays games want to amuse themselves. Thus, games are entertainment. It is one of the general purposes of the games.

Secondly, another purpose of playing video games is that video-games can be one recruitment tool and military training to attract the young to join the military activity and fight for the country as a soldier. For example, American army practice using video games for training by using “point-and-shoot” devices that is known as Fire Arms Training Simulators (FATS). Undoubtedly, political elements are often involved in the process of playing video games.

Quotation 3:

Apart from that, video games can also be an educational tool. When we play the video games, we would know the background and content of the battles of the games, we can have the historical knowledge.

Quotation 4:

5) Case study:
I would like to choose Delta Force - Black Hawk Down as an example in my case study. Delta Force - Black Hawk Down is a first-person shooter video-game. Therefore, this type of video games can most dramatically put the players into the role of the game. It is produced by NovaLogic on 24 March 2003 on Microsoft Windows. It is the 6th game of the Delta Force series.

6) Feature 1:
Interestingly, this game is based on the fact of Somali Civil War in 1993 to develop. In 1993, U.S. Special Operations Forces was to capture Aidid who leads the greatest threat to peace for them. However, Black Hawk helicopters is shot down by Somali warlords because of the wrong military signal. Then, the U.S Army had to take missions and rescue the remaining armies whether they are still alive or not during the gun battle although they experienced heavy casualties finally.

7) Feature 2:
Undoubtedly, this game can let you experience the missions that are similar to the battle I mentioned before. In the virtual world of the game, you can have 5 types of weapons. Here are the weapons you can use when you play the role of a soldier in the game. The point here is that all these weapons are used for the military in the reality. All these are in Classic mode and design for the military soldier to use.

For example:

8) Feature 3:
Moreover, you can mounted in Black Hawk helicopters and and on Military Vehicles to fight against Somali warlord by using these weapons. Exclusive combat tactics and scenarios provided by former Special Operations Soldiers. You will deal with different training such as sniping and marksmanship if you are selected to be an Operator. That means you are going to practice a tactical shooter technology and combat techniques in order to be a professional sniper.

9) Feature 4:
Every building can be entered and you can lurk around any corner. All the things can make the world totally believable.

10) The battle of Mogadishu in 1993 was depicted in the American drama war film, Black Hawk Down in 2001(28/12). And then this game was released by NovaLogic. The details are as follows.

For example, the scenes of American soldiers are killing by others would stimulate American audiences to have personal support of American soldiers and thus they may blindly supporting American military policy.

11) However, from the perspective of cultural indicators, there are some cultural beliefs and values can be found in video games.

Quotation 5:

12) Question:

13) My opinion:

14) References for books and websites:

User Generated Digital Media

“Leave Brittany Alone”

a) How many viewers are estimated to have watched the you tube video?

41,907,074. Indeed, there are thousands upon thousands of people to have you tube video as an entertainment. Everyone can get this video easily on you tube if they want.

b) How would you rate the video?

Actually, I think this video is so funny as the person shows the most "truthful" face to us. There is a great facial expression on his face. He is crying and even screaming in order to share all the feelings he wants to let all people know.

c) Is it of high quality in technical terms? Is it interesting aesthetically e.g. camera angles, use of light, the narrative, and so on?

It is not technical as no special manner is used for making this video. It seems that Chris Crocker was shot himself. Frontal camera angles, soft and ordinary lighting is not interesting aesthetically.
But for the narrative, I think there is a distinctive style. The point here is that there is no completed storyline, only one character to have a reflection of his emotions in this you tube video, so it is different from other you tube videos. To some extents, I would think that it is quite interesting but not aesthetic.

d) Does it raise interesting socio-cultural issues?

Yes, it does. Everyone want to share their opinion on some particular issues, they can make a video and post it on you tube, then all people can watch that. There is no boundary between the viewer and the maker when sharing a video online. You can have some comments on the video. Others see your comments, they may respond to that and thus there is also an interaction between the viewers. You tube makes people open-minded enough as it can help exchange the opinions that are from different countries. It definitely changes the soical culture in the world.

e) Do you think deserved the attention that it received from the Internet community?

It is deserved for us to pay attention to this video. Even it is only for Chris Crocker to express his own ideas and feelings online, it still can let us know what happens in the world, what the people are thinking or what news they are interested in. They all are the reflections of our society and show the socio-cultural changes, we should not overlook it.

f) Briefly describe the video
This video is going to appeal to the public for leaving brittany Spears alone. As I mentioned above, Chris Crocker pretends to be a girl and talks about brittany Spears's performance. He is so pathetic when he shares his feelings on this particular event.

g) Find at least one interesting video, based on Crocker’s or Bus Uncle, and upload it to your blog

This video had a storyline to react what Chris Crocker done in the "Leave Brittany Alone". In this video, Brittany's head was bombed. It is quite funny and amusing.

h) Report some positive and negative comments about this new ability for computer users to make and widely distribute and respond to online films (such as the above three videos). (eg see Leadbeater, We-think, xviii;  Burgess and Green, Youtube, Cambridge: Polity, 2009, 10…, 21-30).

According to the above reading, there are some positive and negative bout this new ability for computer users to make and widely distribute and respond to online films.

For the positive comments, there are the growth of knowledge as everyone can enjoy the information on the Internet freely. People just need to search the particular topic online, then they can get lots of information they want. It is more easier to get the information definitely.

In addition, people make a musical video and then upload it on Youtube, they may become the most popular person on the Internet if their video can draw the attention of the public, for example. As we know, Youtube is a way to "broadcast yourself" into fame and fortune. Therefore, Youtube can give a chance to the computer users to show their talents or initiatives for the public. Finally, they may win a recording contract and become an "ordinary" celebrity.

On the other hand, there are some cultural rearrangements as people are liberating to comment on others' uploading on the Internet. Sometimes, it shows that people are disputing for the conflict of the cultural or political beliefs and values. When people have some comments on others' opinion, others can respond to the comments also, then the complex relations between the producers of the online films and viewers will emerge.

Moreover, we may be doubtful about the information that is correct or not. One of the reason for that is "the uncertainties around various forms of expertise and authority". It could involves some political and cultural problems. For instance, when the hegemony arises, it will get the attention of the public and lose the democratic. Finally, it might be biased the readers whether the information is authentic or not.

These all are the positive and negative comments about this new ability for computer users to make and widely distribute and respond to online films.

Constructing Identity

1 What is identity?
Identity: the fact of being who or what a person or thing is, the characteristics determining this. (Concise Oxford English Dictionary)
2. Interview classmates:
How many online identities do you have? What are they like?
For me, I have 3 online identities totally, details are as follows:
-Gmail and Facebook:Kristen Ho
-Yahoo Email: Nana
For Jenny, her email and facebook account are using "Jenny lo", totally she have 2 online identities.
For marina, she have 3 emails that are using "marina wu" as a name of online identities. Her facebook and renren (Chinese version of facebook) are using "marina wu" as well. Totally, she have 5 online identities.
In what ways are they different to your “in person” identities?
Nothing at all. We all like to use our nickname as an online identity.

What are some benefits of expressing one’s identity online?
Expressing one's identity can help us to recognize who are the one we usually talk to.
Also, we can separate different people into different groups according to their online identity and thus we can be more convenient and easy to communicate with different groups.
What are some risks?
Others may trace your personal information according to your online identities and then you may lost your privacy.
To make matters worse, people may therefore make use of your personal information to do some illegal things.

On your blog write a two paragraph report on a class member who has an interesting set of online identities (you may use pseudonyms ie fake names)

I have one friend who really likes to have a daydream during the lessons. So, she changes her facebook name to "Dreaming xx". It is a funny online identity as I never see someone would use their preferences or habits to be one part of online identity.

Contemporary understandings of identity are changing. Nowadays identity is thought of in more complex terms:

“In sum, the selves that we have are composed of multiple identities and contradictory experiences. In late-modern society, it is almost impossible to have a fully unified, completed and coherent ‘self’; rather, we all tend to have fleeting, multiple and contradictory selves”
(Charles Cheung “Presentations of Self on Personal Homepages”, p45)

3. An example of an online digital artwork that explores identity:

Mouchette: Mouchette.org. See website. Refer to Tribe and Jana, 66-67

Description

·         subject matter
The subject matter is an artist who called herself "Mouchette", but which is not her real name. She pretend to be a 13-year-old teenager who is raped in the 1967 Robert Bresson movie, Mouchette, and express the feelings and the thinking of that French girl.
There are different subject matters on different website's page. For example, a fly symolizes an idea of death and represents that she is dead as "Mouchette" can be translated into "Little Fly" in English.
·         types of activities invited by the site
There are some interactive texts if you click the hyperlinks such as "dummy" and "Triple X". Then, you can send your name and email as well as some feedbacks or comments on her website. Moreover, there are some multiple choices for you to make a guess for her manipulated details.
"dummy"
 "Triple X"
·         style eg colours, composition of pages/screens
The vivid colours are often used in this website. There are some colourful photos to be used as a background. Moreover, some pages use a full black background with white words and thus there is a big contrast we would see.
·         mood
The mood is so aggressive as this website is talking about the suicide and violence. Sometimes, we would see some "bloody" photos which show an idea of death.
The work is controversial because…
·         published comments
Some published comments are so erotic as it arouses people's sexual curiosity. For instance, if you click the hyperlink, "Flesh&Blood", you would see a girl who sticks out her tongue and this page asks that "Want to know what my tongue tastes like?" and "you also want to come that close to me?". Most importantly, it invloves many themes that is related to suicide, violence and death and includes some screaming sounds. It may stimulate the uncomfortable feelings. So, it is a controversial work.

·         classmates’ opinions
Some classmates think that this website gives a disgusting feeling and is not suitable for some childrens to browse. But they all think that it is an interesting website as it uses a story of one dead girl as a theme or topic.

A conclusion:

·         Summing up previous points
To sum up, this website includes many photos and questions to show one French girl's life. At the same time, it spreads a message of suicide. To some extents, it is not moral and very controversial.

Internet and media

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZwNb11n9zk

1) What is the primary source of news for you?

The primary source of news for me is online news. For example, I like watching some news via http://www.bbc.co.uk/.

2) Do you think that 'mass media' will some day be totally replaced by digital media/internet?

Some types of 'mass media' are as follows:

I don't think that 'mass media' will be totally replaced by digital media or internet although I like watching some news online by using my phone.

It is because the online news may not be reliable. Indeed, there are many online news such as BBC news or YAHOO news which are trustworthy and faithful as it is controlled by some offical organization. However, we would discover some news are shared and posted by people on Facebook deliberately in order to spread an anti-social message or even mislead people.

Moreover, many people also prefer to watch news on television or newspaper. Some of them may not really know how to get the information from the digital media or on the internet. Thus, 'mass media' is an important way for some people to receive the social message.

'mass media' can be one traditional way for government or countries to spread the immediate message to public. For example, the television broadcasted the message of September 11 attacks for a mass audience immediately. It can be the most effective way to send the message for society.

So, 'mass media' will not some day be totally replaced by digital media or internet.

Digital Knowledge

1) What is a brief history of the encyclopedia?

The encyclopedia is a branch of knowledge that have lots of entries to record the factual information in order to illustrate things and make a general system for the offspring.

Briefly, the earliest encyclopedia is the Naturalis Historia which is written by Pliny the Elder. His work involves many different chapters such as geography, medicine and so on. Although it probably lacks of proofing the facts, it is so comprehensive as it covers more than 20,000 facts from other authors and his own experience.

In the Middle Ages, there are different kinds of encyclopedia which cover classical erudition and Christians thought. And different countries can have encyclopedias for themselves. For example, China have the Four Greats Books of Song to be the encyclopedic work during the Song Dynasty. During Renaissance, the encyclopedias are more common for scholar and public to have because of the invention of printing.

Since the international development in the 19th and early 20th century, more languages are used for encyclopedia and thus larger market are developed. As for the modern encyclopedia, it is electronic and can even available for everyone to join and use.

2) What are some key features of that encyclopedia

a) according to Wikipedia
Wikipedia is written by thousands of volunteers around the world and supported by non-profit organization. Indeed, it is managed by all-volunteer staff. Everyone can join and edit the information of Wikipedia on the Internet, it means that Wikipedia is not only controlled by the experts. Moreover, its content consists of lots of unacademic topic that can be general reference works for student to do a research. Wikipedia articles are across many Different languages and one-third articles are in English.

b) according to Encyclopedia Brittannica
Encyclopedia Brittannica is written by full-time editors and experts. It can be regarded as multi-volume works. It have a hierarchical give a hierarchical format for outline of knowledge and thus it is useful for checking the fact quickly. Its articles are all in English either.

3) Which encyclopedia was most useful for this research?

I think Wikipedia was most useful for research as it contains many basic information across different kinds of topic for an uninitiated people.

As the above mentioned, its entries and articles are in many different languages such as japanese and French. If anyone want to use the information from Wikipedia, they just need to get it on the Internet freely. Undoubtedly, Wikipedia are in international way for people to get the information they want.

Also, it is unlike Encyclopedia Brittannica as there is no need to study how to find more detailed articles through the hierarchical outline.

4) Can you trust this encyclopedia (the one you used) 100%? Why or why not?

I cannot trust this encyclopedia, Wikipedia fully. It is because anyone can be the editors to change the information. Although there are some volunteer to manage the system and help undating the content after people did an editing, its content may not be correct.

The reason for that is Wikipedia prefer to the "Neutral Point of View" policy. Diverse political, religious, cultural opinions are involved, thus it may not be reliable. Even there are some articles of Encyclopedia Brittannica in earlier editions are criticised that it is not accurate and being questioned. Therefore, I think Wikipedia articles can only be reference works. And I would not trust Wikipedia 100%.

Digital Photography

1. What is the difference between analog photography and digital photography?

First of all, the difference between analog photography and digital photography is that analog photography involves chemical process that is related to photographic film. But digital photography would involve digital process. Indeed, analog photography is more traditional than digital photography in the way of taking photos.

Secondly, digital photography can have digital manipulation. That means we can change everything in a photo, for example, adjusting the colour tones and the contrast between brightness and darkness. Also, we can add any special effects like composing lots of interesting pictures or combining two photos in one frame. All these can be done by Photoshop software and so on. But analog photography is rigid relatively as it only records what you see and shows the most truthful thing. Sometimes, I think analog photography can be more objective that we cannot alter the details of the photos.

Finally, for digital photography, we can save photos in a memory stick, CD or any other electronic devices. It is convenient for us to choose the photos we like and delete the one we don't want to keep either. These functions are something that analog photography cannot do as well.

2. What use is digital technology to photographers?

As the above mention, digital technology can let us alter the photos. For example, we can change the tonal value of the dark and light or choose the natural scenes to be the background  in the photos. Although it would change the content of the photos, people would use digital technology as it can make a great different in the photo and make the photos more interesting.

3. Is photographic truth at an end? Has it ever existed? http://www.pbs.org/ktca/americanphotography/features/digital_essay.html

According to the above website, photographic truth seems to be at an end. Undoubtedly, digital manipulation is becoming commonplace nowadays. Everyone can change the colour or even clean up the details in a photo but leave no tracks. So, it is difficult for us to identify the photo is fake or not. And it definitely affects our sense or thinking when the photos are manipulated. Therefore, photographic truth will be at an end.

In fact, there are many photos are manipulated in newspapers or magazines. For example, people like to change the colour tones of the model's face or adjust the lighting of photos. It can make the photo more beautiful or even perfect. However, photographic truth would not exist. The original photos are "disappeared".

When we see a photo, what the photo are showing may not be the truth whether or not people change the photo by digital manipulation. However, keeping the original or 'truthful' photo can be one evidence in our history. Newspaper should keep the photographic truth as well. Just like keeping the concept of sincererity in our mind. Hope we can do it.

The left one is original photo.

And the right one is the photo I used Photoshop software to manipulate it.

''Gamer Revolution''

1) According to the film, what are some pros and cons of playing video-games for individuals and societies?

According to the film, the pros of playing video-games can be one recruitmen tool to attract the young to join the U.S military activity and fight for the country as a soldier. It can be a military trainning as well. Young people can play with the real soldiers and talk to them in the games. Moreover, young people only have one chance to live. If they died in the game, they cannot get a new start until the game finished, not likely to other games. It represents a ''realism'' in the virtual world of video-games. So, it can help the young learn and get more military experience in such realistic trainning.

Secondly, video-games can be a part of medical treatment and psychological therapy. For example, the young can learn how to live in the reality through playing ''remission''. They learn and practice more, then driving them to the next level. This games can help them have a special experience that they seem to live in a real world in the games.

On the contrary, there are some disadvantages of playing video-games. It promotes and encourages the violent behavior. Actually, players may imitate the violent behavior such as murdering others and do it in real world. They may enjoy killing people and have fun of it. Also, playing video-games will cultivate the aggressive minds of players and stimulate the violent sentiments or ideas. So, players will have violent behavior.

In addition, children will be addicted to playing video-games. It is because game reward engagment. In the virtual world, players can have virtual money and power and so on, that means they can be super hero or even the master of the universe when they are playing the video-games. It makes '' a false sense of identity''. At last, players loss their work, isolate themselves, fail to handle their study, or give up their life to go to death. These negative effects will decrease the productivity of the society further.

2) According to the film, is there any evidence that digital games can encourage aggressive values and anti-social actions in the real world? Do you agree?

There are some evidence to show digital games can make people have aggressive values and anti-social actions. For example, the test of ''FMRI'' scanner proves that there are more activities in brain when players are playing digital games. Undoubtedly, players would have a stronger feeling or emotion in their brain activity. It is the charactristic of aggressive effects as playing digital games provide aggressive impluses to players. Therefore, people may have an anti-social actions as well.

Some research has shown that about 80% of games players would have violent mind that can increase aggressive behavior. I think the reason is that young people would imitate the behavior that is done in the games and then they do it in the real world. For example, one 18-year-old person robbed and murdered a taxi driver because of imitating the same behavior in the games' virtual world. It makes people have horrible desire to act in the reality definitely.

I agree that digital games can encourage aggressive values and anti-social actions in the real world. Although some studies pointed out that there is no clear link between aggressive behavior and the violent ideas in the games and some anti addiction softwares are used in order to limit the hours young people can spend on playing games, it seems that games can give an incentive for the young to have such violent behavior.

Apart from that, I believe that some games such as ''first person shooter'' can promote and spread a message of violence or anti-social actions. It will affect how people think and act so that there are13 countries decided to ban it.

3) Should governments have the right to ban certain games? Why or why not?

I think that government should not have the right to ban certain games. Although these games have such horrible effect on how people will act in the real world, citizen can have a right to choose certain games too. Also, there are some advantages of playing digital games. For example, people can improve their social network and relationship between their friends through playing digital games. Besides, they can relieve their pressure.

If people can have a self-control to play certain games and don't spend too much time on it. Then, they can enjoy the fun of it and thus there is no need for government to ban it.

Animation and CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) in Cinema

  • What are the Pros and Cons of Computer Generated Imagery (CGI)?
For the Pros, Computer can make some roles play in the film and these roles are not existing in the real world although it is performed by some actors in the "backstage", for example, the apes in the Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Indeed, it can help the author to have a great creativity in a film script. It is because author don't need to have misgiving about the authenticity and feasibility of the characters when he or she creates it. That means all the imagined can come true in the film. Most importantly, CGI make hyperrealism. We can enjoy it so much.
As for the Cons of it, as we all know, the movement, facial expression and gesture are all presented by the real actors behind the scenes. Actors don't need to show their face and appearance, so no audience would know who they are without casting information. It is not fair for them because actors also strive for the best performance. When the film is being famous, the actors may not obtain the same benefits.
Also, CGI may not be as real as the normal role because of the hyperrealism too. We never see the characters which are made by digital technology, we would not believe that these characters are existing in the world as it is not a real thing.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) Super Trailer HD
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) Super Trailer HD

  • Will Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) makes actors obsolete? Yes or no? Why?
I think that CGI will not make actors obsolete. The main reason for that is that CGI  is unlike real actors although it can make a dynamic or lively characters. For example, CGI often used to make some 3-dimensional graphics in the science fiction film. However, people would think it is an imagination or a fake graphical image because of hyperrealism. It is ironic that when people are weary of hyperrealism, they would like to choose the real actors again, not the CGI.
So, I think CGI would not make actors obsolete and replace it. They can exist simultaneously.
  • Should digital characters be nominated for acting awards competing with humans?
As I mentioned before, all the motions of CGI are presented and performed by real actors through digital technology. It really involves the acting section. So, I think digital characters should be nominated for acting awards in the above situation.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) Super Trailer HD
On the other hand, some digital characters are created by scanning clay model and used in an animation. These digital characters are not existing in the real world and so they are inanimate. Actually, digital characters can be infinite if people have an inspiration to create more and more. It can be said that it is an imagination for human. Actually, acting awards should be rewarded for someone who are good at acting and making a breakthrough as well as contribution for the film industry. Thus, I don't think this type of digital characters should be nominated for acting awards.
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of motion capture?
One of the advantages of motion capture is that it can make the charcaters more dynamic and lively in their performance. It can give an enjoyment for the audience who love watching animation.
In addition, motion capture can help to express the psychological states and personal feelings if characters have a natural and suitable motion.
However, motion capture may have a sense of exaggeration. When actors want to show one action, they would portray themselves deliberately. It may destroy the whole unity of motion capture, so that audience may think the motion capture is so strange.
Moreover, motion capture may draw the audience's attention and then audience may not concentrate on the content of the movie. There is a loss when paying attention on motion capture excessively.
  • Should animation strive for photorealism?
I don't think that animation should strive for photorealism.
It is because animation acn be a space for our imagination. To me, I regard animation as a form of recreation. It can help us release daily life pressure. Sometimes, photorealism may be too rigid and even static. If it strive for photorealism, we may lose one enjoyment or pastime.

'' Mission to Earth ''

A)What is new or different about this example of digital cinema when compared with a) traditional ways of telling a story b) and constructing a film?

a) '' Mission to Earth '' is an interesting digital cinema I saw. There are some differences between this digital cinema and traditional film in regard to the ways of telling a story and construction of the film.

First of all, '' Mission to Earth '' only shows the keywords to illustrate the main content. Sometimes, it has voice over to tell the audiences what the messages are. It differs from the traditional film. It is because it don't have a certain and structural plot which includes beginning, development, ending and so on. Maybe it just takes daily activities to be one video clip or fragment. For the whole production, it may have only one music to be used, not likely to the traditional film which play a music as a complement of sentiment in some particular moment. There are different versions of the same representation at the same time. It is the most interesting thing I think.

Also, '' Mission to Earth '' have no obvious designated characters and supporting role either. All the scenes are not pre-organised . It invloves different location and no fixed place is recommended. Certainly, the interaction between the holder of the camera and the "interviewee" can show what reality is. And then audiences can imagine the content and goal of that video clip freely. For the traditional film, it does a well preparation before making a film. It leads people to take part in an unrealistic world whether or not it has voice over in the film. The characters would convey all the messages and content through their dialogue. Time, place and theme are always specified and in oder. Even it don't allow people to have a great imagination.

b) As we know, '' Mission to Earth '' is mainly constructed by 2D geometric animation and many video clips. There are many squares in different size within one big frame. Actually, there are two or three video fragment to be used in one frame and different versions of the same representation would be shown at the same time as the features of visual narrative. So, audiences can have a great enjoyment because it gives much more information when they watch. In addition, music is one element in the aspect of using sounds. The traditional film would not use one music in the whole process.

Apart from that, '' Mission to Earth '' have no particular director indeed. It is because organization of content, for example, the format or composition, are determined by the software finally. You just need to have one camera to make a video and then you can use these videos to construct a digital cinema bu using related software. For the traditional film, it would have the director's own style as the whole process is monitored by him or her. That means the director would make the temporal and spatial organization by his or her preferences. Most importantly, it needs time and resources to do a well preparation.

B) What other art (film, digital art, painting etc) does this film remind you of?

This film reminds me of Piet Mondrian’s painting. It is because its composition is represented by rectangular or geometric forms, the visual representation of the motion graphics are constructed by some circles squares, etc. Additionally, it have some video clips. If images are similar to other images that would arrange them closely. All these elements make the whole composition to be more abstract and concrete.
Movie Editions

Concepts: Form

Moreover, the movie or video clips emerge from different position in the whole frame. It makes a sense of parallel movement. The simple composition and style can give a space for our own imagination. Also, the lines and colour is on one flat surface, no matter how you change it. The frame seems to be combined by a fragment of paintings and images. So, it is so modern and attractive. These all are so similar to the features of Piet Mondrian’s paintings, example is as follows.

C) Wrap up- central question for Manovich –what can this new medium do?
This new medium is created by "soft cinema".

As the above mentioned, the software can put 2D animation, motion graphics and some video clips together to construct a film.

This new medium can show much more information as it contains different datas at the same time. Also, it can let us compare all the video clips and images in regard to the visual representation. Sometimes, two video clips might use the same scenes with different version or camera movement that is an unqiue style of this new medium. It is a new and creative medium we can enjoy.

I think this new medium can be one propaganda to spread the anti-war messages such as '' Mission to Earth ''. The video clips show the real suitation of people' daily life activities, so it can help them to express their feelings and what the unfairness they face to the society, their goverment. Then, this new medium can have a function of arousing the awareness of the public.

During the making digital cinema process, although the software decide the sequence of video or the position of 2D animation, the maker can design the whole compostion and the number of frames as well. Even the maker can choose some similar video clips to play together in terms of colour and content.
